Sarah had always envisioned a fairytale marriage. Meeting Daniel, a charismatic man with a promising career, seemed like the realization of her dreams. Their wedding was a grand celebration, reminiscent of scenes from movies, and everyone commented on how perfect they were for each other.
However, the honeymoon phase quickly gave way to harsh realities. Shortly after they settled into married life, Daniel’s mother, Margaret, moved in with them, citing the need for assistance following her recent surgery. While Sarah initially supported this, she soon realized that Margaret's presence would bring more complications than just medical care and additional responsibilities.
Margaret began making subtle, critical remarks almost immediately. It started with minor issues—comments on Sarah's cooking or cleaning methods. “In my house, we always did it this way,” Margaret would say with a tight smile and a hint of malice in her eyes.
Sarah attempted to discuss these concerns with Daniel. “She’s just adjusting,” he would say, dismissing her worries. “You know she’s been through a lot.”
Wanting to believe him, Sarah tried to be patient, but Margaret's behavior intensified. She began undermining Sarah whenever Daniel was not around. Margaret would rearrange household items and then blame Sarah for misplacing them. She would spill water on the floor and loudly complain to Daniel that Sarah didn’t clean properly.
One evening, Sarah prepared a special dinner for Daniel, only for Margaret to have a dramatic outburst, claiming Sarah had intentionally cooked something she was allergic to. Exhausted from work, Daniel did not question his mother’s exaggerated claims and reprimanded Sarah for her supposed thoughtlessness.
The tension in the house grew, leaving Sarah increasingly isolated. Her friends noticed her withdrawal, but she felt too embarrassed to share her struggles. The situation reached a breaking point when Margaret accused Sarah of stealing her jewelry. Furious, Daniel demanded an apology from Sarah.
“I didn’t take anything!” Sarah protested, her voice trembling. “She’s lying!”
But Daniel’s expression remained cold. “Why would she lie, Sarah? She’s my mother. She’s always been truthful.”
Sarah's heart sank as she realized Daniel was oblivious to his mother’s manipulations. The following weeks blurred into a series of accusations and defensiveness. Sarah felt trapped in a waking nightmare, with each day bringing a new, more twisted scheme from Margaret.
One stormy night, Sarah overheard whispers coming from the living room. She crept downstairs and found Margaret on the phone, speaking in hushed tones. “She’ll leave soon, I’ll make sure of it,” Margaret said. “Once she’s gone, he’ll be ours again.”
